James O’Donnell, Organist and Master of the Choristers at Westminster Abbey, has been appointed as Professor in the Yale School of Music and Yale Institute of Sacred Music. He will leave the Abbey this Christmas.

Visitors to Westminster Abbey are welcome to take personal photographs in the church but we ask that you do not use a flash or take pictures during services.

The Abbey uses many different vestments and altar hangings during the year.

Abbey in Wartime
On the outbreak of the second world war in 1939 many of the Abbey's treasures were evacuated for safety to country houses, such as Mentmore.

Icons at Westminster Abbey
Two icons were dedicated in the nave in 1994 and are near the grave of the Unknown Warrior. An icon of St Edward the Confessor was dedicated in 2019.

Coronation Crowns
Coronations have taken place in Westminster Abbey since 1066, when William the Conqueror was crowned on Christmas Day. The church has been closely linked with the royal family all through its history, and that continues today with the monarch visiting the Abbey throughout the year.
