Westminster Abbey to mark Great War centenary
Monday, 10th June 2013
A candle-lit vigil of prayer and an act of solemn reflection to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War will be held in Westminster Abbey on 4th August 2014.
The service is one of a number of events being announced by the Government to mark the centenary of the Great War.
During the evening of silence, prayers, readings and music, the congregation will see the light of candles disappear one by one until a final remaining candle is extinguished at 11pm.
It is hoped that the Abbey’s candle-lit vigil can be replicated in other churches, and in various ways by other faith groups, around the country.
