Royal Green Jackets 40th Anniversary
Wednesday, 22nd March 2006
The Royal Green Jackets celebrated the 40th anniversary of the formation of the regiment at Westminster Abbey on Thursday 22nd March.
The regiment also exercised its Freedom of the City of Westminster by marching from the Abbey to Horse Guards with bayonets fixed and band playing.
The Royal Green Jackets were formed forty years ago from the amalgamation of three infantry regiments. One of these, the King's Royal Rifle Corps formerly the Queen's Westminsters, was granted the Freedom of the City in 1951.
The regiment will merge with The Devonshire and Dorset Light Infantry, The Light Infantry and The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Light Infantry to form a new regiment, The Rifles early in 2007.
