Parliamentarians pay tribute to Lord Weatherill

Parliamentarians past and present, family and friends packed the Abbey this week to remember the life and work of a former Speaker of the House of Commons, The Lord Weatherill.

A distinguished guest list of peers and MPs attended a thanksgiving service including Baroness Thatcher, Sir John Major and Baroness Betty Boothroyd.

The address was given by The Lord Hunt of Wirral MBE.

In the bidding, Canon Robert Wright who led the service, spoke of Lord Weatherill’s business acumen, his military service in India, Burma, and Malaya in the Indian Army, and his distinguished service to the nation’s parliamentary institutions, especially as an eminent Speaker of the House of Commons.

Family members attending included Lady Weatherill, Bernard and Bruce, sons and daughter, Virginia Lovell.
