Ben joins Abbey as new Organ Scholar

Benjamin Chewter is the Abbey’s new Organ Scholar. Educated at Christ’s Hospital, he held the Organ Scholarship at Canterbury Cathedral before going up to Cambridge as Organ Scholar at Emmanuel College.

During his tenure as Senior Organ Scholar – and under his direction – the choir toured Mexico, Germany and Sweden, made a recording (From Generation to Generation) on the Priory label, and gave a critically-acclaimed performance of Bach’s St John Passion.

After graduating in Music, Benjamin became the Assistant Organist at the College and the Organist of King’s Voices (the mixed-voice choir of King’s College Chapel) for a year before taking up his current post in London.

He is frequently in demand as an organist and conductor, with recent organ recital venues including the Three Choirs Festival, Westminster Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and various colleges in Cambridge (King’s and St John’s Colleges being the most recent).

He continues his studies in organ with David Briggs and in conducting with Christopher Robinson. Benjamin is an Associate of the Royal College of Organists and also holds the College’s Choral Conducting Diploma.
