Abbey Congratulates Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

The Dean & Chapter of Westminster congratulates the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their son.

To mark the occasion the Westminster Abbey Company of Ringers will ring a full peal on the Abbey's ten bells commencing at 2pm on 23rd July to coincide with the gun salute in Green Park.

The peal will comprise five thousand changes of Cambridge Surprise Royal and last for over three hours. It is a historic tradition that the Abbey’s bells are rung for significant royal occasions. For the birth of Prince William in June 1982 a peal of Yorkshire Surprise Royal was rung.

The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall who conducted the wedding service of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in April 2011, said:

We assure Their Royal Highnesses of our prayers and very best wishes. The birth of any child brings great joy to families and friends. This birth, of a child destined one day to be Monarch, will rightly be celebrated throughout the United Kingdom and Realms, the Commonwealth and beyond.
