Abbey collection to support Cambridge University scholarship

A collection taken at a service of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of C S Lewis will be used to support a new scholarship at the University of Cambridge in honour of the writer, scholar and Christian apologist.
A memorial to C S Lewis in Poets’ Corner will be dedicated during the service on 22nd November.
Lewis was Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge from 1954 until shortly before his death in 1963. The post was founded with him in mind. He had previously taught English at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he was a Fellow and Tutor, for 29 years.
Medieval and Renaissance Literature thrives as a study subject on every academic level because of the influence of Lewis but its study in this country is on the decline. At present, there are many more British medievalists—including a number from Cambridge—in the US than there are in the UK.
The new scholarship scheme will enable a talented young scholar to take up the offer of a place at Cambridge to study Medieval Literature at an advanced level, thereby continuing Lewis’s academic and literary legacy.
