A joint celebration of Solemn Vespers

The choirs of Westminster Abbey and the Roman Catholic Westminster Cathedral will sing together at the Cathedral in Victoria Street on Friday 7th May 2010 at 5.00pm for a joint celebration of Solemn Vespers.

This service forms part of a regular partnership between the two churches.

During Edwardtide in October they join for Evensong at the Abbey.

The first joint Solemn Vespers at the Cathedral was in May 2008.

The Choirs will be singing Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Magnificat octavi toni, and Francisco Guerrero’s Surge propera.

The Office of Vespers is the traditional Evening Prayer of the Catholic Church; Evensong in the Abbey’s own Anglican tradition is a combination from the 16th century of Vespers and the late night office Compline.
