Charles Marsh

In the east cloister of Westminster Abbey, near the gates, is the grave of Charles Marsh, a clerk in the War Office and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Thomas Vialls was later buried with him. He was the only son of Charles Marsh, bookseller, and attended Westminster School 1744-1753, being a King's Scholar and Captain of the School (which is why he was buried here). Later he went on to Cambridge University. He died unmarried. The grave inscription, translated from the Latin, reads:

Charles Marsh, Arm[iger], died Jan 21 Anno Domini 1812, aged 78 years
