Charles MacLeod

A white marble memorial to Lt. Colonel Charles MacLeod was originally erected in St Paul's chapel in Westminster Abbey but it was moved to the adjoining chapel of St John the Baptist in the late 19th century. It is by sculptor John Bacon junior and shows an angel mourning beside a wall on which is inscribed the word BADAJOS. The inscription reads:

To the memory of Lieut. Col. Charles MacLeod who fell at the siege of Badajos aged 26 years. This monument is erected by his brother officers. "In Lieut. Col. MacLeod of the 43rd Regt. who was killed in the Breach; His Majesty has sustained the loss of an officer, who was an ornament to his profession and was capable of rendering the most important services to his country" Vide. Badajos is in Spain and was a battle in the Peninsular War which claimed many casualties.
