Overview

Reflect upon the role that memorials have, in helping us to learn about the past and why historical legacy matters, with this informative lesson. Explore how varied memorials can be in size and design, with case studies of abolitionists memorialised in the Abbey and some others who are memorialised elsewhere. This lesson culminates in a creative design activity for a collective memorial for abolitionists, encouraging students to consider visual language.

Learning objectives

  • To discuss the significance of memorials in the context of remembering the lives and work of abolitionists
  • To discover more about the words and imagery used within memorials, before designing their own
  • To understand more about Britain’s transatlantic slave trade, its effects and its eventual abolition
