Overview

Investigate the differences between modern and historical royal funerals in your classroom, in the context of the news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death. Designed to last for one hour, this KS2 lesson uses inference grids to understand historical sources that depict royal funerals. The lesson culminates in an ordering activity of facts about St Edward the Confessor and an opportunity for pupils to design their own memorial window.

Learning objectives

  • To learn about the death of Edward the Confessor, his funeral and burial at Westminster Abbey
  • To find out about modern royal funerals (state and ceremonial)
  • To consider the nature of a memorial
