  On the wooden panelling in St George's chapel are painted the names of Westminster Abbey staff, or former choristers, who died for their country.

  John Richard Clayton and Alfred Bell designed several stained glass windows for Westminster Abbey and St Margaret's Church Westminster. Clayton also designed some memorials.

  Glass painters Joshua and his son William Price worked on two stained glass windows in Westminster Abbey.

  The grave of Herbert Edward Ryle, Dean of Westminster, is in the centre of the nave, near the grave of the Unknown Warrior.

  Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Travers Harris is remembered in the RAF chapel. His name is painted below the Battle of Britain memorial window.

  On the wall of the south transept is a marble monument to Scottish politician James Stewart Mackenzie. This shows a portrait relief medallion of James.

  Visitors to Westminster Abbey until the end of August will be able to see the original grave of English Civil War revolutionary Oliver Cromwell for the first time in over 60 years.

  In the south choir aisle is a tablet for Captain William Julius. The border is decorated with flowers, cherub heads and a winged death’s head.

  In the nave are two monuments to Ann and Carola, wives of mathematician Sir Samuel Morland. Inscriptions are in English, Hebrew, Greek and Geez.

  In the south choir aisle of Westminster Abbey is a wall tablet of black alabaster, with a shield of arms, for Sir Richard Bingham.

  Politician and Soldier

  A large white marble monument to Elizabeth, Duchess of Northumberland stands in this chapel. This was designed by Robert Adam and sculpted by Nicholas Read.

  The monument to Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon (died 1596) is the tallest in Westminster Abbey, at thirty-six feet high. Various members of his family are buried in the Carey vault.

  Nicholas Hawksmoor, architect, was the Abbey’s Surveyor of the Fabric from 1723 but he is not buried here nor does he have any memorial tablet.

  In the west aisle of the north transept of Westminster Abbey is a memorial to Admiral Sir John Balchen (or Balchin).

  William Pitt the Elder and his son are buried in the north transept of Westminster Abbey. His wax effigy is on display in the triforium.

  Henry’s tomb is below his elaborate chantry chapel in Westminster Abbey. His funeral armour and the effigy of his wife, Catherine de Valois, can be seen in the Abbey Galleries.
