• The Queen to visit Abbey for 450th anniversary

  HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh will visit Westminster Abbey and Westminster School on Friday 21st May during celebrations marking the 450th anniversary of the granting of the Abbey’s Charter by Queen Elizabeth I.

  After Geoffrey Chaucer was buried here, Poets’ Corner became the place where many other creative people were buried and remembered. • Susannah Bernard

  In the north cloister is a small white marble tablet to Susannah Bernard. Unfortunately when the inscription was re-painted the date was put wrongly.

• Edward IV

  Edward IV was crowned in Westminster Abbey on 28th June 1461. His queen Elizabeth Woodville was crowned in 1465. Their infant daughter Margaret has a small monument in St Edward's chapel.

• James Butler, Duke of Ormond & family

  Soldier

  James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormond, and several members of his family, are buried in a vault at the east end of Henry VII's chapel.

  In the chapel of St Nicholas is the tomb of William Dudley, Bishop of Durham. The Purbeck marble altar tomb has lost the brass effigy.

• Cheyneygates

  Hidden above the entrance to the cloisters, Cheyneygates was once the home of Edward IV’s queen, Elizabeth Woodville, and was the birthplace of Edward V.

  Lady Susanna Williams was buried "near Sir Edward Spragge" on 26th September 1689. This was most probably in the north ambulatory but neither have markers.

  Dr John Dolben was Dean of Westminster 1662-1683 but he has no monument here as he’s buried in York Minister, having been made Archbishop there.

• Samuel Goodenough

  Priest/Minister

  The Reverend Dr Samuel Goodenough is buried in the north cloister. He lies near the grave of Dr William Markham, Head Master of Westminster School.

• Sir Clifton Wintringham

  Physician and Doctor

  In the west aisle of the north transept is a monument to physician Sir Clifton Wintringham. This shows a mourning woman leaning on a sarcophagus.
