Conservationists’ discoveries

Four conservation students, working at the Abbey during their Easter holidays, were thoroughly cleaning the tomb and grille of Henry VII and made some surprising discoveries.

Chapel reveals old stonework

The conservators have discovered a discarded fragment of stonework in the Chapel of St John the Baptist.

Old Contemptibles, British Expeditionary Force
Soldier
In the west cloister is a memorial to the "Old Contemptibles", or British Expeditionary Force 1914. The monument is of limestone and Welsh blue slate.

A memorial to Lt. General William Anne Villettes was erected in St John the Evangelist's chapel. It was later moved to St Andrew's chapel.

Henry John Temple, Viscount Palmerston, Prime Minister, is buried with his wife in the north transept. There is an over life-size statue of him nearby.
