Library collection
Today’s library was established after the Abbey was founded as a collegiate church in 1560. It has been in the former monastic dormitory since 1591.

The Abbey and the Royal Family
British kings and queens have forged a strong bond with Westminster Abbey. Since 1066 every British monarch, except two, has been crowned here.

The Abbey bells can usually be heard before services and in celebration of church festivals and royal occasions.

Our archive is one of the oldest and richest in England. We hold the records of Westminster Abbey from the tenth century to the present.

The Abbey Choir enjoys a recording partnership with Hyperion. Its catalogue includes music for the great feasts, as well as Renaissance masterpieces and twentieth-century classics.
