• Westminster Abbey sends condolences to His Majesty The King on the death of Queen Elizabeth II

  The Dean of Westminster, The Very Reverend Dr David Hoyle OBE, has sent his condolences to His Majesty The King and the Royal Family upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II, on behalf of all at Westminster Abbey.

  The ashes of former Dean of Westminster Eric Symes Abbott are buried in the nave near the altar there, with a portland stone tablet.

  Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, universally known as Monty, was created a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath.

  In the north-west tower chapel in the nave is a memorial to George Augustus, 3rd Viscount Howe. He was commander of the Royal American regiment.

  Lieutenant Colonel Sir Richard Fletcher, chief engineer to the Duke of Wellington in the Peninsular war, has a white marble memorial in the north west tower.

  In the chapel of St Michael is a column in memory of Admiral Richard Kempenfelt by John Bacon junior

• Evensong to be streamed live from the Abbey on Sunday

  Evensong from Westminster Abbey at 3.00pm on Sunday 16th May will be streamed live for worshippers to join in from home.

  In the nave of Westminster Abbey is the grave and monument to Major John André, executed as a spy by the Americans in 1780.

  In the north transept is a memorial stone to six soldiers, including General Sir Henry Barnard, who served and died in the Indian Mutiny.

  The grave of Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, the famous admiral, is in the central part of the nave of Westminster Abbey.

  The ashes of the Reverend Jocelyn Perkins, Minor Canon and Sacrist of Westminster Abbey, are buried in St Faith's chapel at the Abbey.

  In the south transept is the grave of Sir Archibald Campbell of Inverneil as well as a memorial to him and nephew James Campbell.

• Elizabeth II

  Queen Elizabeth II's coronation was held at Westminster Abbey on 2nd June 1953. Her wedding to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, took place in 1947. Her funeral was held on 19th September 2022.

• Unknown Warrior

  At the west end of the Nave is the grave of the Unknown Warrior, whose body was brought from France to be buried in 1920.

  Herbert Thorndike, priest, was buried in the east cloister of Westminster Abbey with his brother John. There is no marked gravestone to see.

• George, John, Arabella and Henrietta Churchill

  Politician, Soldier and Sailor

  Admiral George Churchill was buried in the nave of Westminster Abbey and has a large monument. His sister Arabella is also buried. John Churchill Duke of Marlborough was briefly buried here then moved to Blenheim Palace.
