Woman’s Own Children of Courage Awards

Ten children were honoured for their courage and bravery on Wednesday 12th December at a carol service for the 34th annual presentation of the Woman’s Own Children of Courage Awards led by the Dean of Westminster.

Sarah Brown, wife of Prime Minister Gordon Brown, presented awards to Liam Archer, Jack Binstead, Ellie Bishop, Dre Curtis, Myles Fitzpatrick, Jack Murray Bell, Emily Palmer, Milly Pyne, Nathaniel Smith and Helaina Stone.

A special award to a Family of Courage was given this year to the Tomlinson family. Jane Tomlinson, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, raised over £1.85m for cancer charities through her athletic achievements. She lost her battle with cancer in September and her son, Steven accepted the award on behalf of his family.

Over 300 exceptional children have been honoured since the awards began 34 years ago, all having in common courage and dignity way beyond their years. The carol service was also attended by stars of film and screen, including Anthony Andrews who read the citations, Cerys Matthew who read The Christmas Story, Luke 2:1-16 and Shayne Ward who sang Over the Rainbow.
