The Funeral of Tony Benn

The funeral of Labour former Cabinet minister Tony Benn took place at St Margaret’s Church Westminster Abbey on Thursday 27th March 2014.

The service was conducted by the Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, who also gave the Address.

The Right Honourable John Bercow MP, Speaker of the House of Commons, read 1 Corinthians 13 and the Right Honourable Ed Miliband MP, Leader of the Opposition, read from The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan.

Stephen Benn played on the organ his own composition, Madrigal. Tributes were given by Tony Benn’s children and brother, Stephen, Hilary, Melissa, Joshua and David Benn.

Prayers were led by the Reverend Dr James Hawkey, Minor Canon and Precentor of Westminster, and said by the Reverend Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons, and the Venerable Dr Jane Hedges, Canon of Westminster and Acting Rector of St Margaret’s.

The service was sung by the Choir of St Margaret’s Church conducted by James O’Donnell, Organist and Master of the Choristers, Westminster Abbey. The organ was played by Thomas Trotter.

The bells of St Margaret’s Church were rung half-muffled by the St Margaret’s Society of Change Ringers.
