Sir Winston Churchill Remembered
Friday, 30th January 2015
Members of the Churchill family and representatives of Churchill-related organisations joined the congregation at a wreath laying to commemorate the Right Honourable Sir Winston Churchill KG OM CH TD at Westminster Abbey on Friday 30th January.
2015 marks fifty years since the death of the war-time leader, sixty years since his final resignation as prime minister, and seventy-five years since his 'finest hour' leading the fight against fascism in 1940.
The wreath laying was conducted by the Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, who gave the Welcome and Bidding.
Flowers were laid on the memorial stone commemorating Sir Winston Churchill in the Nave by John Winston Churchill, great-great-grandson; Iona Pite, great-great-granddaughter; and Christable Fraser, great-great-granddaughter. A wreath was laid by Captain George Trypanis, The Queen's Royal Hussars.
Sir David Cannadine gave a Reflection; the Honourable Celia Sandys, grand-daughter, read from Sir Winston Churchill's Parliamentary Tribute to Neville Chamberlain; and The Reverend Canon Adrian Daffern, Team Rector, Benefice of Blenheim, read Hebrews 11: 32 - 12: 2.
Prayers were led by the Reverend Dr James Hawkey, Minor Canon and Precentor of Westminster.
