New Canon Treasurer for Westminster Abbey

The Reverend Canon David Stanton has been appointed a Canon of Westminster. He will become the Abbey’s Canon Treasurer and Almoner.

Canon Stanton is currently Canon Precentor and Pastor at Worcester Cathedral. He succeeds the Reverend Canon Dr. Robert Reiss who retires next month as Sub Dean, Canon Treasurer and Almoner of Westminster Abbey.

The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr. John Hall, said:

The Canon Treasurer has oversight within the Dean and Chapter of Westminster of the financial affairs of the Abbey and of its fabric. Canon Stanton has direct relevant experience and expertise to bring to these responsibilities and he will also play a full part in the religious life of the Abbey and in our many special services and events. He will be a worthy successor to Canon Bob Reiss and we look forward to welcoming him and his family to the Abbey community.
Canon Stanton said:
I have thoroughly enjoyed my ministry as Canon Precentor at Worcester Cathedral and now warmly welcome the new challenge of working as Canon Treasurer at Westminster Abbey. I am particularly looking forward to overseeing policy for finance and fabric and working with talented colleagues in sustaining and further developing the life and mission of the Abbey. The opportunity for serving the Church at the heart of national life is immense.
The Dean of Worcester, the Very Reverend Peter Atkinson, said:
The Diocese of Worcester and the Cathedral community are immensely grateful to Canon David Stanton for his ministry as Precentor and Pastor for the past eight years. There are many who are indebted to him for his careful preparation of acts of worship and for his pastoral care. We wish him and his family well as they settle into the life of Westminster Abbey.
