His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI remembered

The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr David Hoyle, has expressed his sorrow at the death of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.

In 2010 Benedict became the first Pope to visit the Abbey in its thousand-year history when he attended a service and prayed at the Shrine of St Edward the Confessor during his State Visit to the UK.

The Dean said:

‘We mourn the passing of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI a courageous and decisive Christian presence in modern times and a man who combined a profound commitment to Catholic tradition with deep learning. He and our sisters and brothers in Westminster Cathedral will be in our prayers at this time of remembrance and sorrow.’
