Friday, 29th March 2019
The Dean and Chapter of Westminster have appointed Greg Morris as Director of Music at St Margaret’s Church, Westminster Abbey, following the appointment of Aidan Oliver as Director of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus.
Greg Morris is currently Assistant Director of Music at the Temple Church, Musical Director of Collegium of London, and founding Musical Director of the Bar Choral Society. He will take up his new post at St Margaret’s on 1st July 2019.
Greg's work as a conductor encompasses a broad range of music and wide variety of venues. With the Temple Singers and Temple Players, professional ensembles of leading singers and period instrumentalists based at the Temple Church, he has performed extensively in both the mediaeval Temple Church and the 16th-century Middle Temple Hall.
As Musical Director of the chamber choir Collegium Musicum of London, and of the Bar Choral Society, he regularly conducts large-scale works ranging from Renaissance to contemporary music, as well as more varied programmes in more intimate and unusual venues.
Since starting work at the Temple Church 13 years ago, Greg has accompanied its acclaimed choir in numerous concerts, broadcasts, recordings and tours, and in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen. He has also performed with the BBC Singers at the BBC proms. As a soloist, he has performed throughout UK and Europe, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, released 3 solo CDs, and gave the premiere of David Briggs' Organ Concerto; he recently completed a year-long cycle of the complete works of J.S. Bach in venues around London.
Greg held scholarships at St George's Chapel, Windsor, Jesus College, Cambridge and St Martin-in-the-Fields. He was awarded the Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians for his prize-winning performance in the FRCO diploma, and was subsequently Assistant Director of Music at Blackburn Cathedral.
Greg Morris said:
I am thrilled to have been offered the opportunity to work as Director of Music at St Margaret's, and am very much looking forward to working with the distinguished musicians already there.
The Rector of St Margaret's and Canon of Westminster, The Reverend Jane Sinclair, said:
I am very much looking forward to working with Greg. He is a superb musician and experienced conductor, who has much to bring to the strong musical tradition of St Margaret's so ably developed by Aidan Oliver. Greg's energy and expertise will be invaluable as he takes St Margaret's music forward over the coming years.
