Dean and Chapter underline climate change commitment

The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr David Hoyle said:

'As we approach the COP-26 climate summit, prayers will be said daily in Westminster Abbey. We ask God’s blessing on the Conference and pray that there will be a renewed energy, imagination and practical commitment to find solutions that the world so urgently needs.

The Dean and Chapter have recently undertaken a carbon audit of the whole Abbey precincts as a first step towards renewing their own efforts to respond to the climate crisis.

We welcome and endorse the Joint Appeal signed by the Archbishop of Canterbury and other religious leaders hosted by Pope Francis at a meeting in the Vatican on 4th October. We also welcome and affirm the Terra Carta initiative made by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.

We firmly believe that this is not only a crucial time for all Christians to learn more about the impact of climate change, but that our collective response will help to safeguard God's creation.'

Prayer

‘Creator God, giver of life, you sustain the earth and direct the nations. In this time of climate crisis grant us clarity to hear the groaning of creation and the cries of the poor; challenge us to change our lifestyles; guide our leaders to take courageous action. Enable your church to be a beacon of hope; and foster within us a renewed vision of your purposes for your world, through Jesus Christ our Lord, by and for whom all things were made. Amen.'
