Friday, 9th July 2010
A Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Mrs Mary Cornelia Dee Skaggs CBE was held in the Lady Chapel of Westminster Abbey on Thursday 8th July at 6.00pm.
The Address was given by The Very Reverend Colin Semper, Canon Emeritus of Westminster Abbey. Patricia Jelley read Luke 14:7-11. The Very Reverend Dr John Hall, Dean of Westminster welcomed the congregation, led the Prayers and pronounced the Blessing. The service was sung by the Lay Vicars of Westminster Abbey and the organ was played by Robert Quinney, Sub-Organist. A wreath was laid during the service by Philip Jelley at the Mary Skaggs window to the south of the RAF chapel.
Mary Skaggs supported and loved British heritage all her life. She gave through the Skaggs Foundation to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Appeal in the 1980s. There are two windows in the Lady Chapel, left and right of the RAF Chapel dedicated to her with the theme of peace and reconciliation. Her Foundation was formed from her family business - the Save-On and Safeway grocery store chains in the USA. She was one of the oldest living people in the United States of America when she died last October aged 109.
