Viscount Byng of Vimy
Julian Hedworth George Byng, Viscount Byng of Vimy (1862-1935) has a stall plate in the Lady Chapel at Westminster Abbey as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath. He is buried at Beaumont cum Moze in Essex.
He was a son of George, 2nd Earl of Strafford and his wife Harriet and his grandfather was a commander at Waterloo. Julian also joined the army and served in the South African War. He married Marie Moreton but had no children. In the 1914-1918 war he fought at Ypres and Gallipoli. Later he was Commander of the Canadian Corps which distinguished itself at the Somme and Thiepval Ridge. Its greatest feat was the capture in 1917 of Vimy Ridge. In 1919 he was created Baron Byng of Vimy and in 1926 became a Viscount. His later posts included Governor General of Canada and Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. In 1932 he was made a Field Marshal.
