Thomas, Lord Wharton
Thomas, 2nd Lord Wharton was buried in St Michael's chapel in Westminster Abbey on 26th June 1572. But he seems never to have had a monument or inscribed gravestone as nothing is mentioned for him in the guidebook to the Abbey published in 1600.
He was born in 1520, son of Thomas, 1st Lord Wharton and his wife Eleanor. He was Member of Parliament for Cumberland and for Northumberland and steward of the household to Princess Mary. When she became Queen he was made a privy councillor and held several posts during her reign. In 1547 he married Anne, daughter of Robert, 1st East of Sussex and their son Philip eventually succeeded to the title. But when Elizabeth I came to the throne Thomas was imprisoned in the Tower of London for openly celebrating Roman Catholic mass. He died at his house in Canon Row near the Abbey.
