Thomas Garth

Colonel Thomas Garth, of New Bond Street, was buried in the south aisle of the nave of Westminster Abbey on 11th January 1731, aged 66. He has no monument or grave inscription.

He was a son of William and Mary Garth of Gainford in county Durham and was a brother of Sir Samuel Garth the celebrated physician. His wife was Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Colleton of Barbados. Their six year old son Thomas was first buried at Godstone but removed to be buried with his mother on 28th July 1746 in the east cloister. Another son Thomas had been buried in 1714 aged eight. Their son John married and had children and to him and his brother James the Colonel bequeathed his estates. His nephew was Bowes Garth, son of his brother William.
