Theodore Gunter

Theodore Gunter was buried in the south transept of Westminster Abbey on 22nd January 1713 (in modern dating). His grave is in the centre of the aisle but the inscription is now very faint. It reads:

T.G.Ar. died 17 Jan 1712 aged 93

Ar. stands for armiger, or bearer of a coat of arms. The coats of arms shows "Quarterly, 1&4 a lion rampant, 2&3 party per fess indented" with the crest of a lion rampant crowned. These arms would appear to be those of a Danish family of Gunther. The date on the stone is in Old Style dating. Nothing is known of him but his will was proved by his friends William Atwell, goldsmith, and John Cookes, draper of London. He left considerable bequests but seems to have had no family.
