Sir William Payne-Galwey

Sir William Payne-Galwey is buried in a vault in St Margaret's church Westminster. He has no inscribed gravestone and unfortunately his wall tablet is now obscured by the organ. The inscription reads:

Sacred to the memory of General Sir William Payne-Galwey, Bart. Colonel of the 3rd Dragoon Guards who died on the 6th April 1831 aged 72 years and whose remains are deposited in a vault near this place

He was born in 1759, a son of Ralph Payne and his second wife Margaret (Galwey). His brother was John Willett Payne, Member of Parliament and his half brother was Ralph Payne, 1st Baron Lavington, Governor of the Leeward Islands. William joined the Dragoons in 1777 and served in Ireland, the Peninsular War, India and Spain. In 1812 he was created a baronet. His wife was Lady Harriet Quinn and they had sons Sir William and Philip and daughter Caroline. He added the surname Galwey in compliance with the terms of the will of his uncle Tobias Galwey.
