Sir Thomas Peyton

Sir Thomas Peyton, 2nd Baronet of Knowlton in Kent, is buried in the north ambulatory in Westminster Abbey. He was a son of Sir Samuel Peyton and his wife Mary (Aston or Ashton). His brothers were Samuel and Edward (who was killed in Flanders) and his sisters were Anne, who married Henry Oxenden, Elizabeth and Margaret who married Thomas Osborn. Thomas married firstly at St Bride's church in London on 21st May 1636 Elizabeth daughter of Sir Peter Osborne. Two of their daughters, Katherine and Elizabeth, are buried with or near their father. His second wife was Cecilia widow of Sir William Swan, and his third was Jane (nee Monins). His title became extinct at his death and his daughters sold the manor of Knowlton. The inscription on his grave reads:

Sr Thomas Peyton of ye county of Kent, Baronett, [died] 11th Febry. 1683/4. Also here lyes Dame Katherine Longueville, relict [widow] of Sr Thomas Longueville of Wolverton in the county of Bucks. [Buckinghamshire] Bart. and second daughter to Sr Thomas Peyton of Knowlton in Kent, Bart. Dyed December the 30th 1715 aged 70.

The coat of arms on his stone has now worn away but it is shown on Elizabeth's grave: "sable, a cross engrailed or".

The grave of his third daughter Elizabeth is adjacent. She married William Longueville, lawyer, and died January 14th 1715 aged 69.

It is not known who his first daughter was.
