Sir Richard Lane

Sir Richard Lane, Member of Parliament for Worcester 1727-1731 and one-time Mayor of that city, was buried in the north ambulatory of Westminster Abbey on 4th April 1756, near the grave of Esther de la Tour de Gouvernet (eastern end of this aisle). But he had no gravestone and there is no monument to him.

He was a son of Richard Lane, merchant of Bristol, and his wife Sarah (Davie). Sir Richard's wife Sarah was buried in this aisle on 4th October 1733 aged 65. Three daughters Ann, Sarah and Mary, all unmarried, were buried in 1748, 1773 and 1780 respectively. Mary, aged 82, left her property to the family of Chief Justice Willes and her cousins, the sons of Archdeacon Atwood.
