Samuel Bolton
The Reverend Samuel Bolton is buried in the south transept of Westminster Abbey. His gravestone is near the west wall and has been re-cut. It now reads simply:
Samuel Bolton, prebendary of this church Feby. 11th 1668
The earlier inscription was recorded and that read:
Here lieth the body of Samuel Bolton, Doctor in Divinity, Chaplain in Ordinary to his Majesty Charles II and prebendary of this Collegiate Church, deceased the 11th of February 1668
The date 1668 is Old Style dating, now called 1669.
He was the son of Reverend Robert Bolton, rector of Broughton, Northamptonshire and at the Restoration became a chaplain to the king and was appointed D.D. by royal command. In 1662 he was made a prebendary of Westminster and he was also rector at St Peter le Poor and St Leonard, Foster Lane in London. His wife was Mary but they appear to have had no children.
