Samuel and Catherine Strutt

Samuel Strutt, for many years assistant clerk of the House of Lords, died at his house in Dean's Yard and was buried in the east cloister of Westminster Abbey on 31st January 1785 with his first wife Catherine. Their gravestone was next to that of Aphra Behn near the steps up to the Church and the inscription, now worn, read:

Here lieth the body of Mrs Catherine Strutt wife of Samuel Strutt, Esq. of Old Palace Yard Westminster who died July 17 1770 aged 38 years. Here also lies the body of the said Samuel Strutt, Esq. who died January 22 1785 aged 49 years

A daughter Lydia was baptised at St Margaret's Westminster but died young. By his second wife Charlotte (Locke) Samuel had sons Samuel (who became a clergyman) and George Henry. His daughter Charlotte Row died unmarried and was buried in the south cloister on 30th April 1808 aged 28. Widow Charlotte married secondly Ralph Willett, a rare book collector, of Dean Street, Soho, and was buried in the south cloister on 18th May 1815 aged 69.
