Margaret Grant
In the east cloister of Westminster Abbey near the entrance to the Chapter House is the grave of Margaret Grant. The inscription has been re-cut and reads:
Mrs Margaret Grant eldest daughter of Andrew Fletcher of Salton, Esquire, wife of John Grant of Elchies, Esquire, both of North Britain. She died the 5th of April 1775 aged 50
The original inscription had a different beginning section and read:
Here lieth the remains of one of the most amiable and best of women, Margaret, eldest daughter of....
North Britain means Scotland. Her parents were Andrew Fletcher, Lord Milton (the distinguished Lord justice-clerk of Scotland and principal keeper of the signet) and his wife Elizabeth (Kinloch). John Grant (son of Patrick, Lord Elchies) was himself one of the barons of the Exchequer in Scotland and died in 1775 in Grenada where he owned plantations. Margaret's sister was the scholar Elizabeth Fletcher.
