John Windebank

John Windebank, physician, was buried in the middle part of the south cloister of Westminster Abbey on 16th August 1704. But he never seems to have had an inscribed gravestone. He was the fifth son of Sir Francis Windebank, well known Secretary of State to Charles I. On 11th June 1618 he was baptised in St Margaret's Westminster and was educated at Oxford university. Created a doctor of medicine by order of Oliver Cromwell in 1654 and he studied abroad for a while before starting a practice at Guildford in Surrey. 

His wife Susanna, daughter of John and Susanna Holloway of Oxford, whom he married around 1648, was buried in the cloister on 11th January 1682. In his will he mentioned the children of his son Richard. Their daughter Anne was buried on 7th June 1681. Another daughter Frances, widow of Matthew Loveday of Oxford, was buried, aged 87, with her parents on 14th January 1737. She had married Matthew around 1666 and their daughter Ann died unmarried and was buried on 19th November 1739. Another daughter, Susanna Blundell, had a son Matthew who died aged about 20, and a daughter Frances.
