John & Catherine Doughty
Clergyman and author John Doughty is buried in the north ambulatory of Westminster Abbey. He was born at Martley in Worcestershire in 1597 and educated at Oxford. He was a lecturer at St Edmund's Salisbury and after the Restoration was rector at Cheam in Surrey, becoming a prebendary of Westminster in 1660. His wife was Catherine. She married secondly Sir Thomas Heath and thirdly Henry Croone (who was buried in the Abbey cloister in 1689). Catherine was buried with John on 30th May 1694 and left bequests to various nieces and to the poor of Long Compton in Warwick and Lydden in Kent. A bequest left to the Abbey is still used to purchase books for the Library. The Latin inscription can be translated:
John Doughty, S.T.P. [professor of sacred theology] Prebendary of this Church. Died 25 December 1672 aged 75
