Jane Rider

In the south cloister of Westminster Abbey is a marble wall memorial to Jane Rider. The inscription reads:

Near this place lies interr'd the body of Mrs Jane Rider of the City of Litchfield [Lichfield] who departed this life the 7th of January 1734/5. To whose beloved memory her brother William Rider Esq. late Consul at the Island of Madeira (with whom she had resided there, the nine last years of her life) caused this to be placed

It is not clear why she was buried in the cloisters, unless her brother had a house in Westminster. Although called Mrs in the inscription this is short for mistress ie. an unmarried lady. The date on the tablet reflects the change in date from Old Style to New Style so now this would be 1735.
