Henry Carr

In the south transept of Westminster Abbey, near Dr Busby's monument, is the grave of Major Henry Carr. It is worn on one side but the name can still be seen. The complete inscription was recorded in a 19th century book and reads:

Here lyeth interr'd ye body of Major Henry Carr, one of ye Gentleman Ushers and dayly waiter to King Charles the 2d and King James the 2d. He married Venetia, sole daughter and heir of Edward Carew Esq. by whom he had issue one son, Henry, and four daughters Elizabeth, Anna Sophia, Alena Maria and Carew. He descended from that Right Honble. & ancient familie of ye Earls of Ancrum. A pious Christian, faithful husband, tender father, and constant friend. He changed this life for a better the 25th day of August, anno 1690. Aetatis suae [aged] 38. Resurgam

At the top is a rubbed coat of arms. The family name of the Earls of Ancrum was Ker or Kerr but his name is spelt Carr on the stone and in the burial register. His son Henry, baptised in 1681, was buried with his father on 30th March 1699. A daughter Venetia, not named on the stone, was baptised in 1680, Elizabeth and Anna were baptised in St Margaret's Westminster in 1682 and Alena in 1689.
