George Hickes

The Reverend Dr George Hickes (or Hicks), writer and linguist, was buried in St Margaret's church Westminster on 18th December 1715 but he has no monument or gravestone. The entry in the burial register records "Dean of Worcester which Deanery he lost by refusing to take the Oaths at the Revolution, he was consecrated Bishop Suffragan of Thetford by Dr Lloyd, the deprived Bishop of Norwich". The register records the burial of his wife on 10th December 1714. She is called there Elizabeth but she was actually Frances (Marshall). They had no children. 

He was the second son of William Hickes of Newsham Hall in Yorkshire (his brother John was a minister and brother Ralph a physician) and was born on 20th June 1642 and his mother was Elizabeth (Kay). After education at Oxford university he held various posts including rector of St Ebbe's in Oxford and vicar of All Hallows, Barking in London and became a Canon at Worcester cathedral and then Dean from 1683-1691. He was also chaplain in ordinary to the King and to the Duke of Lauderdale. He was deprived of his Deanery as he did not take the oath to the new King William III in 1689 at the "Glorious Revolution".
