George & Ferdinando Hastings
In the north transept, in front of Admiral Warren's monument, is the grave of two children George and Fernando Hastings. The inscription reads:
Here lie interr'd the bodies of the Honble. George and Ferdinando Hastings, second and third sons of Theophilus and Selina, Earl and Countess of Huntingdon. Ferdinando 3d son, born Janry. 23 1732/3, departed this life April 21 1743, in the 11th year of his age: and George 2d son, born March 29 1730, died Decr. 20 1743 in the 14th year of his age.
A coat of arms is carved at the top of the stone. Both died of smallpox while attending Westminster School. The family had a house in Downing Street. Ferdinando died at Mrs Preston's boarding house in Dean's Yard.
Their brothers were Francis later 10th Earl of Huntingdon (Master of the Horse to the Prince of Wales (later George III), and First Lord of the Bedchamber who died unmarried in 1789) and Henry (died unmarried in 1758), both of whom were at the same school. Their mother Selina (Shirley) daughter of Washington, 2nd Earl Ferrers, founded a sect of Calvinistic Methodists.
The family vault is at St Helen's church, Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire.
