George Burden

George Burden, Receiver General of Westminster Abbey from 1577 to his death in 1593, was buried in the north transept but he has no monument or gravestone. He had been deputy receiver of rents for the Dean and Chapter of Westminster from 1564-1589 and prior to that he was associated with the household of Sir Thomas Cecil and his wife.

He was the son of a Mr Burden of Kent and was educated at Rochester grammar school and Oxford and Cambridge. His wife was Elizabeth Prestwood. In 1572 he was Member of Parliament for Aylesbury. From the Abbey he acquired a lease of Chiswick manor, on condition that the house was made available to the boys of Westminster School during time of plague in London. He owned a great deal of property around the country and made several charitable bequests in his will although he sustained financial losses towards the end of his life.

His will is at the City of Westminster Archives Centre
