Elizabeth, Lady Lumley
Elizabeth, wife of Richard 1st Viscount Lumley of Waterford, was buried in the vault of the Earl of Exeter in St John the Baptist's chapel in Westminster Abbey on 2nd February 1658. She has no monument but her name was inscribed on a stone in the chapel in the 19th century which reads:
Elizabeth (Cornwallis), 2nd wife of Richard, 1st Viscount Lumley, 1658
She was a daughter of Sir William Cornwallis and his first wife Lucy (Neville). Her first marriage, to Sir William Sandys, took place at her father's house in Bishopsgate in London in 1596. Her second to Richard, of Lumley Castle in co. Durham, was at St Bride's church, London, in 1630. She had no children. She was a great benefactress and founded almshouses and schools in north Yorkshire and in London.
