Dean & Chapter commissions Abbey paintings
Thursday, 15th March 2018
Westminster Abbey’s Dean & Chapter has commissioned a unique series of watercolours of the interior and precincts of the Abbey church by the artist Alexander Creswell.
The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, said:
This is an exciting time in our 1000-year evolution and for the first time ever a large suite of paintings has been commissioned to capture the stunning architecture and amazing light of the Abbey.
Alexander Creswell is an internationally acclaimed British artist born in 1957 and best known for the watercolours he painted of the rooms damaged and restored in the Windsor Castle fire of 1992.
His distinctive style in watercolour, completely self-taught, combines subtle colouring and skilful draughtsmanship with a strong reverence for natural light.
The paintings are being exhibited in the Chapter House from 17th March to 16th May.
The Chapter House is in the Abbey’s east cloister and entrance is free.
