Somme Centenary to be marked by Overnight Vigil
Westminster Abbey will hold a National Vigil at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior on Thursday 30th June 2016 to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.
The Vigil will commence with a 30-minute service in the evening and conclude with a dawn service on 1st July. The Abbey will be open to the public throughout the night as Vigil is kept.
The overnight vigil will be held to remember those lost in the battle, which claimed over one million lives and affected the lives of millions at home, and to pray for peace. Those who took part on all sides of the Battle will be represented by the groups of service personnel taking part in the Watch.
Details about attendance at the Vigil will be published in Spring 2016.
