The prayers, readings and Act of Rededication which will be used during the Service of Thanksgiving Marking the 70th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, are now available to download.
It is hoped that the materials will be of assistance to churches planning their own services during the weekend of commemorative events for VE Day taking place across the UK from 8th – 10th May.
The Abbey service, at 11.00am on Sunday 10th May, will be attended by Her Majesty The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, accompanied by THR The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall and other Members of the Royal Family. Among the congregation will be veterans and their families, representatives of Allied nations and Commonwealth countries that fought alongside the United Kingdom in the conflict, and government and military representatives.
Victory in Europe Day was the public holiday that marked the formal end of the Second World War in Europe. Short services of thanksgiving were held every hour in the Abbey from 9.00am to 10.00pm attended overall by 25,000 people. A service was also held the following Sunday, 13th May, when the standards of Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa were laid on the High Altar to symbolise the loyalty of the whole Empire during the war.
The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, said:
'The service to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day will be an opportunity to give thanks for all those who sacrificed so much in the cause of peace, to celebrate our nation's historic alliances and our reconciliation with former enemies and to pray for lasting peace and prosperity throughout Europe.'
The service will be broadcast live on BBC One.
