The following list of people buried or commemorated in Westminster Abbey provides links to information about them and their monuments. There is also information on organisations commemorated. The list is NOT COMPLETE at present, but further entries are always being added. Photography is NOT permitted within the Abbey Church, only in the cloisters. Photos, sizes 6x4 or 8x6 inches (to UK or airmail), can be purchased from the Abbey Library (NOT the shop). Email the Library for prices and other information.

Pages include a transcript of any inscription and an English translation if the original is in Latin. Spelling in English has often changed over the centuries and this is reflected in the inscriptions.

    Sibell, Countess Grosvenor (1855-1929) gave the altar in the south aisle of Henry VII's chapel in Westminster Abbey and the 16th century tapestry above was given in her memory.

    The stained glass in the south rose window of Westminster Abbey is a memorial to Hugh Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster. This was designed by G.F.Bodley and M.R.James with glass by Burlison and Grylls.

    George Grote, the celebrated historian, was buried in the south transept of Westminster Abbey on 24 June 1871. His bust is by Charles Bacon.

  9. Henry Grove

    The Hon. Henry Grove, Lieutenant General, who had fought in Flanders under the Duke of Marlborough, was buried in the east cloister of Westminster Abbey on 26 November 1736 aged 71 but he has no monument or gravestone.

    In the west aisle of the north transept of Westminster Abbey is a monument to Lt.General Joshua Guest. By sculptor Sir Robert Taylor. He is buried in the east cloister.

    The ashes of Dr Douglas Guest, Organist and Master of the Choristers, are buried in the west cloister of Westminster Abbey together with his wife.

  12. Guinness family

    Members of the Guinness family presented new Waterford crystal chandeliers to hang in Westminster Abbey in 1965. They were designed by A.B.Read.

    The ashes of Sir Harold Gurden, M.P., were scattered in the churchyard of St Margaret's Westminster but there is no gravestone.

  18. Sir Goldsworthy Gurney

    The window in memory of surgeon and engineer Sir Goldsworthy Gurney in St Margaret's Westminster was unfortunately destroyed during the Second World War. The window was by Edward Frampton.
